Each of the meticulously crafted hard wood boxes (2 1/2" wide x 5 1/2" long with a 4" long stone) contains a genuine hard Arkansas sharpening stone, the finest natural honing stone on the planet. the largest and most homogenous deposits of this stone, known to geologists as "novaculite" are found in the Ouachita Mountains of central Arkansas. Containing micro-crystalline quartz, novaculite has been coveted for centuries owing to the ultra-fine abrasive properties that make it excellent for sharpening knives and tools. Generally described as 1100 - 1200 grit, it renders such a razor sharp edge that surgeons used it to hone their scalpels before the advent of disposable blades.
