This is an extremely rare 1st edition of "The Life and Death of Sir Matthew Hale, Kt. Sometime Lord buy Chief Justice of His Majesties Court of Kings Bench," written by Gilbert Burnett. This is a short biography of Matthew Hale, considered by many to be among the most influential legal scholars and jurists in English history and a huge influence on English Common Law. Hale (1609-1676) lived during one of the most tumultuous times for Britain: the Cromwellian Civil War period of the 1650s-1660s. He was a lawyer, a Justice of Common Pleas 1653-57, Member of Parliament 1654-1660, Chief Baron of the Exchequer 1660-1671, & Chief Justice of the King's Bench 1671-1676. His writings are acknowledged as a principle influence on William Blackstone's famous treatise, "Commentaries on the Laws of England." Measures 4" x 6.5" x .75". Weight 6.1 oz. Bound in cowhide, covers & first flyleaf have separated, but present. Stamp of defunct Presbyterian College of Carmarthen, Wales (1840-1963). Great history.
