buy A ritual scene from the Temple of Isis in Pompeii - 1st Century AD Wall Mural from Herculaneum - 12x12" Canvas Wall Art

This amazing ancient scene of the Temple of Isis in Pompeii shows a ritual of the Mysteries of Isis in progress! This is from a wall mural in the city of Herculaneum in the 1st Century AD.

Here, a priest dressed as the Egyptian God Bes (God of Mothers, Children and protecting the Household) dances in a religious scene at the top of the entrance to the Temple of Isis. Behind him, inside the Temple entrance, musicians play music, and a person holding a Sistrum rattle keeps time to the left.

Before the temple, a Priest stands at the bottom of the Temple steps, possibly proclaiming part of the story of the Young Horus, who who as an infant and child would have been under the protection of the God Bes.

People at the rite are praying, and offerings are being made at an altar set before the temple steps. Two Ibis birds, symbolic of the Thoth, the God of Knowledge are shown near the altar.

This mural is a rare record of a religious rite in action, and likely records the story of Isis while her son Horus is still a child and is yet to challenge the god Set.

This 12x12" canvas is on a wood frame and is ready for hanging. It is 1.5" wide, so it will easily also stand on a shelf or table.
