Product code: Burkina Faso Indigo Cloth Mid Century | Beautifully Faded Worn Ethnic Hand Loomed Textile Approximately 62" buy x 34" or 157 Cms x 86 Cms

Here is a beautiful, mid-century, circa 1950-60
Burkina Faso textile referred to as indigo cloth.

Indigo dyed cloth has been produced for centuries.
In Japan, patterned indigo textiles are known as
shibori. Indigo use dating to 6,000 years ago
has been unearthered in Peru.
Produced in West Africa for hundreds of years,
a renewed interest in the traditions of
the ancient dying techniques which produced
a sort of revival & surge of indigo cloth
during the 1980s has been marred by
Chinaʻs 21st century penetration into the market with synthetics,
displacing a culture of local cloth dyers.

This piece measures about 62" x 34".
It is well worn, soft and faded to perfection. 7 narrow, hand
loomed strips have been hand sewn together to form the
cloth. Old repairs and some missing stitches have
been pictured for you. I have hung the piece in front
of a pane of glass so that you can see how the light
travels through the weave.

At some point during its life someone did what appears
to be some kind of appliqué work in the shape of
hearts at one end. Some of the stitching and fabric
remains.

This a fabulous, vintage, Mossi made wrap, once
worn.
You can use it as originally intended which is
for covering the body.
Or, as popular buy today, repurpose it for interior
design.

The mask is a prop and other textiles pictured will
have listings of their own.
