Vintage Sogan (Brown) Hand Drawn Semen Gurda Batik Shawl

This batik called semen gurda. Semen comes from the word 'Semi' which means grow, so the meaning is "the growing life" or "the prosperous life".

Semen motif has 3 parts of ornament. First, the land ornaments which contain buy flora and fauna. Second, the air ornaments which contain garuda, birds, and mega mendung (clouds). Third, the sea or water ornaments which contain snake, fish, and frog.

This motifs related with Triloka (Three Realms) or Tribawana concept. That concept is teaching of three worlds: the middle world, the place for human lives; the top world, the place for gods and holy creatures; and the under world, the place for the people whose have the incorrect way of life or filled with anger.

The style is called semen gurda. This batik features celeng kewengen motif (the diamond shape in the center of fabric), various floral, gurda motif, and isen (tiny pattern) as background. The colors are light brown (as background), black, and brown (as motifs).

Condition: Has stains, tiny holes, and some thin out fabrics as seen in picture (you may ask for more detailed pictures just send us a message).

Used to be worn as daily clothing as hip wrapper, tight around as sarong/bottom for Indonesian men/women especially in Java island, before the more practical western style of pants and skirts became daily clothing.

A handdrawn batik is produced through labourious work, started from hand sketching, applying wax painting on each dots and strokes to resist coloring, and accordingly successive coloring processes. Each piece can take up from 1-4 months of work depending on the complexity and sophistication of the motif.
