Product code: Japanese buy Porcelain Cloisonne

Here is an elegant and utterly unique modern Japanese decorative plate; a vivid example of Japanese cloisonné applied to porcelain.

Known in Japan as “shippo,” or “seven treasures,” skilled artisans can achieve gem-like colors applying cloisonne techniques. They have long experimented with new mediums and colors such as gold and silver foils.

This plate's meticulously patterned design recalls textile. The piece was purchased in Tokyo at a fine ceramics shop in 1990. It is likely no older than that, and in flawless condition. The pure white porcelain back has a swirling etched pattern that signifies the maker's studio.

The plate measures 9” x 9” x ½” high. It comes with an old paper and wood hand fan from the 1980's. The fan has inked lettering along the edge and has a pearl attached to thread at its joint. As beautiful as it is, with its 40 year patina, these fans were commonplace throughout Japan as simple utilitarian devices in hot weather!
