"Dragonfly & Shells"
Raku is a firing technique
dating back to 16th century Japan. During the 1950-60's, this ancient art
of Raku was given a twist from the West, by legendary clay artist, Paul Soldner, among buy others.
Following this “East Meets West”
Raku combination,
I use a white crackle glaze
and fire my work in an outdoor kiln
to just about 1800 degrees.
Using long metal tongs,
I remove the red-hot pottery then place it into a fire-proof chamber containing combustible materials.
The heat causes the combustibles to
ignite into flames. The container is tightly covered, and then serendipity
goes to work.
The smoke of the combustibles is absorbed by the unglazed clay, and into the crackels of the glaze.
With the often unpredictable fires
of Raku, my goal is to create unique pieces of art that are truly
treasures of grace and beauty.

________
Raku pottery is not vitrified. Raku is enjoyed for its artistic beauty, as it is neither food nor water safe.
A glass or plastic cup containing water may be inserted into the vase to hold flowers and protect the raku pottery.
