ANTIQUE 19th Century Lace large Berthe rare Schiffli Point De Neige or Gros Point de Venise needle lace COLLAR 60x20x9 inches Cream Shade
"Lace berths were long lace pieces designed to be worn off the shoulder. When laid flat, they form more than a complete circle, typically a circle and a half. Popular in 19th century when elegant evening gowns with deep necklines and bare shoulders were in vogue. They are popular today because they are so long, and can be worn many ways including tied loosely as a scarf or ruffled down the front of a V-neck dress”.
STYLE: Decorative antique 19th century needle lace large Berthe collar - could be Point de Neige or Gros Point de Venise. I believe it is to be Schiffli machine-made masquerading as Point de Neige! - what a collar!
COLOUR & PATTERN: This is an amazing all lace Berthe collar in very good condition considering its age! A lovely shade of soft cream or ecru! This Berthe is not on a mesh and has layers of picots which makes me consider that it's Point de Neige.
I've had some guidance about the lace and been told by an expert that it is machine-made Schiffli lace masquerading as Point de Neige handmade needle lace .
A word about the condition: a few breaks but hard to see and there is the slightest of neck staining but I haven't attempted to hand launder this collar and leave it up to buy you to launder, send to a cleaning company or leave it has been.
SIZE APPROXIMATELY: Neck opening is 20 inches measured around; the border base of the collar is 60 inches - quite a large collar, cape of lace; the depth is 9 inches.
CONDITION: Very good condition for its age and a few comments are mentioned above.
---------------
Almost all the collars I list are antique and vintage, not new and not reproductions, and have been produced either by hand or machine in the 19th and 20th century. But some which are from the 1940's I make mention of that and do my best to accurately describe these collars with the type of lace and fabric.
Most of the collars are not laundered or dry-cleaned unless I mention that in the listing. Many have been acquired at auctions and often been in box of linens or trunks for many years; therefore there could be handling stains or flaws.
Please read the descriptions closely and look at the many photos zooming in on areas you particularly are interested in seeing clearly.
THANKS FOR LOOKING!
