As a photographer I'm fascinated by structures, patterns and colors - and coral is the pinnacle in that regard. The importance of coral is the meaning behind these works. Coral is a unique life form; it is an animal, but also a plant. A coral animal, a polyp, has a symbiotic relationship with micro-algae: The algae live in the tissue of the animal and convert light into nutrients and into colour. The algae produce the food for the coral animal. Coral owes its color to the algae it contains. The algae cannot withstand a rapid rise in water temperature. If the temperature rises too much, the algae will be repelled and the coral will fade. This is a sad truth, and that's why I took photo's of them on colored paper, to make them float in endless colorful spaces.
