Vintage Shotai Shippo Transparent Cloisonné Lidded Apple Shape Box/射击景泰蓝 Cloisonne Bowl/Asian buy Plique-A-Jour See Through Round Box

This is a beautiful vintage Plique-a-Jour translucent enamel round lidded bowl/box in the shape of a stylized apple fruit. The lid and the bottom half of the box are hand decorated with dainty red, blue and yellow flower garlands against the see through “scaly” background and accented with an ornate light blue border. There are two additional red flower accents in the middle of the lid and the bottom. The box has a round brass pedestal and a brass finial in the shape of an apple stem. Very attractive. Rare example of fine quality workmanship.

Plique-A-Jour is the French version of the Japanese Shotai Shippo which means a vitreous enamelling technique where the enamel is applied in cells (similar to cloisonné), but with no backing in the final product, so light can shine through the transparent or translucent enamel.

The box measures approximately 3” in diameter x 2-1/2”T from bottom to the end of the apple stem finial on top. Made in Tainjin China where they have the French Style Porcelain House.
