Charming antique Victorian little engraved locket that is probably front-and-back gold (a layer of gold leaf on the exterior, not gold on the interior). Parts of the outside rim that I was able to acid test hold for both 10k and 14k gold, but other parts do not, so I am not sure what to assume. It was sold to me as gold. It is decorated with engravings on both sides: plant motifs and geometric designs on one side, and on the other side a dove bird among flowers and branches, one of which still retains traces of taille d'epargne black enamel. The engraving is delicate and subtle so the bird outline among the foliage is more visible from certain angles, depending on how the light hits the surface of the locket. Please note this is a small item, much enlarged in the photos. The inside is silver-tone with some darkening and retains an old photo. The jump ring might be a repair and the bail is probably a later addition. The locket stays firmly shut thanks to its tight hinge, but it does click shut. Offered with new gold-tone matching chain. Such an elegant and romantic piece with wonderful antique charm. You will enjoy wearing this little treasure with the quality of a family heirloom.

About 7/8 x 9/16 inches without the jump ring and bail. Chain about 16 inches long.
