Brave the wilderness with ease when you use this leather camera strap – inspired by the American black bear – for your photography adventures.

Every cut, stamp, and tool-work upon this leather piece was done by hand at The Wishing Owl's workshop. This strap is made from 1" wide, 8 - 9 oz (1/8" thick) vegetable tanned leather to provide strength and durability to the strap's performance. At the end of the strap, there are heavy duty swivel snaps to secure the camera to your person. The leather was dyed a burnt amber, embellished with antique silver hardware, and finished with resolene to create an eye-popping gloss that protects the strap's brilliant color from UV rays, rain, and dirt.

Although the smallest of North American bears, American black bears are opportunistic eaters and can live just about anywhere they can find food. Their natural diet includes fish, insects, grass, berries, roots, and young elk/moose/deer. With navigations abilities superior to humans as well as excellent hearing, smelling, and long-term memory, the black bears are incredible omnivores who can forage up to 20 hours and 20,000 calories per day when needed. The black bear's wide palate makes them vital “ecosystem engineers” who keep ecosystems in balance by reducing populations of large herbivores, and by dispersing scat with seeds and nutrients into the soil. Their abilities made them prominent figures in mythology across the world who exemplified strength, stamina, fearlessness, and wisdom. Today, it is common for humans to have interactions with bears due to the expansion of housing developments into primary bear habitat.

Have you spotted a black bear before? Their key characteristics are usually black fur and white hair patches on the chest, straight face profiles, and no large shoulder humps. Take note: their genetic variation can cause their fur coats to be dark brown, cinnamon, or even white! When in doubt, identify them by the tracks they leave behind. As seen on the leather strap, black bear tracks can be identified by the curvature of its pads and toes (When you draw a straight line between its pad and toes, it should run through the big and little toe).
