Folded Camel cigarette pack prison folk art with an image of Jesus found along historic Route 66 in New Mexico. Likely 1950s or 60s, this is an unusual example of this craft that takes advantage of idle hours and makes use of whatever materials are at hand. Prisons are hothouses of inventiveness. Fueled by a persistent desire to be productive, often coupled with wanting to be acknowledged by others - either on the inside or the outside - those who are incarcerated make use of ordinary materials to create extraordinary objects. They sometimes save over many months and trade for the volume of a specific material needed to complete a project. In some cases, their materials are confiscated, meaning they have to start over again. The design of this folded paper object is complex, including an elegant built-in base that allows it to stand. It is visually interesting and structurally sturdy. It has an aged patina. Through alchemy, its maker has transformed waste into art.
