An original map of Warwickshire dating from around 1720 By original we mean this piece of paper has existed since it was originally printed in 1720, it is NOT a reproduction or modern printed copy. There are obviously a finite number of these maps which were printed at the time and many of them will not have survived the last 300 years so this is an opportunity to own a piece of history.
This map comes from "Britannia Depicta" which was an illustrated pocket road atlas for Britain. It was printed in numerous editions over many decades from 1720 into the 19th century. It featured strip maps. The atlas was based on the earlier work of John Ogilby who published the first British road atlas in 1675. Britannia Depicta was printed in 1720 by Emanuel Bowen and John Owen's firm Bowen & Owen. It was one of Bowen's earliest works. A road atlas, it contains two hundred and seventy three road maps along with drawings of landmarks and miniature county maps of each of the counties of England and Wales. It followed on John Ogilby's original with updated style of historical and heraldic detail. It was an unusual feature of the atlas that the maps were engraved on both sides of each page, and this resulted in a handier-sized book.
This map is a copper engraving which has later hand colouring.
It is now in a conservation quality, acid free mount which ensures its protection and could easily be framed. Any labels shown are on the outer covering which is easily removed. The paper the map is printed on is very good condition for its age, a document which has survived 300 years is rarely pristine in condition buy.
