The fabric for the Sardinian purses and coin purses in this shop are handwoven in Samugheo, a small town in Sardinia renowned for its flourishing textile industry, and thoughtfully repurposed into purses by two sisters in Cagliari, a seaside town on the south of the island.
The orbace fabric is Sardinian wool obtained from the longest, thickest filaments of the sheep during combing. This particular purse fabric has been delicately hand-embroidered and is generally used for the vests of traditional Sardinian costumes.
Our production partner in Samugheo is a small family-run workshop, founded in the early 1990s and revered in the territory as the go-to provider of high quality and hard-to-find fabrics. They hand-select, comb, spin and weave (on an ancient horizontal family loom) all of the wool and silk material used for Bisaccia and ceremonial clothes by employing centuries-old, traditional methods and processes lone forgone because of the difficulty of production.
