This listing is for an exquisite Yakumo-nuri lacquerware natsume tea caddy made around 20 years ago by Takeda Issei. It is made of wood coated in glossy black lacquer, and the exterior features transparent golden lacquer with small pieces of mother of pearl. This piece is very unique and exudes warmth with its vibrant golden colours. It comes with its original signed wooden storage box, as well as a turmeric coloured wrapping cloth for when the item is not in use. *SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS LISTING FOR SHIPPING SUSPENSIONS AND/OR AVAILABLE OPTIONS.

Yukumo-nuri refers to lacquerware produced in Matsue and Izumo in Shimane Prefecture. The first Yakumo lacquerware was created towards the end of the Edo Period by master craftsman Sakata Heiichi. He used his knowledge of Chinese lacquerware techniques to create lacquered pieces with transparent layers. Products are made by applying multiple layers of lacquer that are sanded and polished flat. Thin pieces of mother of pearl, as well as gold and silver makie powder are added to create beautiful designs in between the layers. Over time the appearance of the lacquer becomes more transparent and the colours below become more vivid. In 1982 Yakumo-nuri was designated as a Shimane Traditional Local Craft. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Koedo and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
