Product code: Vintage Paul buy Cloutier (of Canada) Original Signed Limited Edition Aquatint Etching, With Embossed Decorations, of Saint-Louis Gate in Quebec

This is a pretty original aquatint etching that was made, circa the 1990s, by Canadian artist Paul Cloutier. It shows Saint-Louis Gate (which is one of the entry points in the fortified walls surrounding the Old Québec historic district, in Quebec City, Canada), people in a horse-drawn carriage that is going through the gate's door-less entrance, and people walking along a tree-lined street that is in front of the entrance. The white etching paper also has an embossed design, which resembles a section of an iron railing (similar to the railing that is actually on a part of Saint Louis Gate), above its central colored image. The central image is (primarily) in the colors of orange, yellow, green, and brown. There is a hand-written notation in the lower left corner of the etching, indicating that it is no. 528, from a limited edition of 760 prints. It is also signed (in pencil) by the artist, in the lower right corner. Descriptive information about the art of ‘Etching' is attached to the dust cover on the back of the print.

Paul Cloutier was born in Montmagny, Quebec, Canada, in 1946. He developed a love of painting at a young age, studied Painting, Sculpture, and Engraving in college, and obtained a Bachelor of Fines Arts degree from Quebec's Universite Laval. After first spending several years working as a teacher, by the mid-1980s Cloutier was working as a full-time artist. In North America and Europe, he has participated in various workshops, his work has been widely exhibited, and he has won many awards and prizes. This includes (but is not limited to) the 1987 Grand Prize at the Loto-Quebec printmaking competition and the 1993 Purchase Prize from the Society of American Graphic Artists (SAGA) in New York. In the early years of his career, Cloutier created paintings and etchings (particularly those showing sites in Quebec and those with abstract looks). By the early 2000s, he had changed his focus to creating collagraph prints that allowed him to continue to use his painting skills.

The framed and double-matted etching is buy about 11 7/8 inches (wide) by 13 inches (high). The actual image is about 3 3/8 inches (wide) by 4 inches (high).

The etching and its mattings are in very good condition, with no tears or stains. The frame, which appears to be wood that has been painted a bronze color, is also in good condition.
