This fun and funky whirligig looks suspiciously like it may have been a Cub or Boy Scout project for a den of young men needing to earn their woodworking badges. We're judging that partly from the amateurish decorations on the canoe, and the fact that the boys' paddles are just nailed on.
As such, this unique whirly is a sacred piece of rustic folk art from a bygone era.
The canoe is 19 inches long; the paddles are each 7" long. This gig is made from 3/4" wood. The paint is faded from age and some exposure to weather. You're going to want to spray it with polyurethane if you plan to mount it out where the wind, rain, and sun will beat on it.
We can only guess how old this gig might be. We suspect it's been stored in a garage or barn for a number of years or it would show even more signs of weathering. The heyday of Scouting was back in the mid-1900s, so it doesn't seem a stretch to buy assume it's at least 50 or 60 years old.
If you ever went canoeing in a Scout Camp, this should bring back fond memories, whether or not you dumped over!
