Product code: Artisan Crafted Mixed Metals (Sterling buy Silver & Copper) Heart Brooch 1.75”

This is a magnificent artisan crafted design made sometime in the 1990s. It is a heart shaped brooch. The heart shape is the universal symbol of romantic love.

The brooch features a mixed metal composition incorporating a textured sterling silver heart shaped back plate topped by a dimensional hammered copper heart and completed with a dangling bronze element.
This unique composition also has some significant detail. The texture on the backplate is hand stamp work. This particular stamp is often used to represent a sunrise. The plate is further enhanced by wire work stitching on one side.
The dimensional heart has a a circular opening. This opening gives the design a visual focal point for within the interior is a gorgeous faceted glass heart in a rich ruby shade. This heart is accented by a series of thin copper wires set in a starburst pattern.
Altogether, a beautiful composition.

The brooch also has a myriad of symbols often associated with romantic love:
1. The sunrise is symbolic of new beginnings, in this case new love.
2. The layered heart (silver, bronze, ruby glass) symbolizes the depth of feeling. The ruby representing inner feelings of complete and total love.
3. The wires wrapping the glass ruby heart represent “The Chained Heart” which symbolizes unconditional love and eternal devotion.
4. Lastly, the pointed dangle represents an arrow head which symbolizes love has struck its mark.

This is a passionate design, perfect for the one you love. It would be a completely romantic gesture if you were to gift it while explaining the symbolism….a lovely way to confess your deep feelings.

History of the Heart Shape:
The history of this iconic symbol is quite interesting. Since the human heart has long been associated with emotion and pleasure, the shape was eventually co-opted buy as a symbol of romance and medieval courtly love. It grew especially popular during the Renaissance, when it was used in religious art depicting the Sacred Heart of Christ and as one of the four suits in playing cards. By the 18th and 19th centuries, it had become a recurring motif in love notes and Valentine's Day cards.
