‘Fossil' is hand sculpted of sterling silver and fine silver. Experimentation helps me see things in a new light, and this bit of raw silver is one of my experiments. I like seeking different routes to texture within a design and I often start by experimenting on smaller scales to see if it will be effective. For this piece, I melted silver over a petite snail shell. The results were a destroyed snail shell and an interesting impression of the snail shell at the edge of the molten silver. Destroying the snail shell was an unforeseen outcome, but I like how the shell patterns have become immortalized within the confines of silver. I do a lot of experiments, particularly with texture. I may continue with this idea of snail shells for texture or I may not – the important bit is trying something new and seeing what results. This ring is a reminder to keep trying new things. It keeps the mind and the process fresh, and sometimes the results lead to a whole new path. 8, ¾ x 1/2
