The Dog Barber
This underfed Frenchman, ready to groom a hapless poodle, comes from a set of twenty-four caricatures that Matthew buy and Mary Darly published in 1771.
This caricature depicts a French dog barber who stands in profile holding a pair of scissors in one hand and a wooden box made to serve as a stool in the other. His coat which would have been fashionable in the 1740s, was well out of fashion by the time this print was published in 1771. He wears a muff around his neck, an accessory associated with the French at this time. Under his arm is a black, long-haired dog, who seems to be struggling to get free. His hair hangs in a straight unruly mass on his shoulders, but he wears a long neat queue down the back and a tiny cocked hat on his head. On a hanging board in the upper right corner is a sign: "La. Vengeance Decrotteur. Royal tond. des. Chiens proprement."
The Darlys developed a new British print genre - small etched caricatures of single figures against plain backgrounds, their identities indicated through dress, pose and a few props. Many of these works mocked the fashionable manners of contemporary London dandies called "macaronis," and the Darly's wares soon became known as macaroni prints no matter what their subjects.

This giclée print delivers a vivid image with maximum color accuracy and exceptional resolution. The standard for museums and galleries around the world, giclée is a printing process where millions of ink droplets are “sprayed” onto high-quality paper. With the great degree of detail and smooth transitions of color gradients, giclée prints appear much more realistic than other reproduction prints. The high-quality paper is an archival acid- and lignin-free paper with an expanded color gamut, natural contrast and high ink load.
