Product code: Vintage 1940s JARKO ZAVI Rare, Early Hand-Painted Czech-Canadian Studio Pottery Bowl buy

A striking and early bowl, circa the 1940s, by Jarko Zavi (1907-1987), a renowned Czech-Canadian ceramic artist, who emigrated to Canada on the eve of World War II, setting up shop in Toronto, and then, from 1946, near Cobourg. He worked as a full-time potter for over four decades, becoming known for his hand-formed figurines as well as his signature glaze colours and illustrative style. This bowl in an early work, thinly thrown buy with trimmed interior rings and vertical notches at the rim. The turquoise glaze is superb, nicely revealing the red clay body as it thins over edges, and is set off with charming hand-painted stylized leaves, trees, and bands of bright yellow.

Incised mark to base with Zavi's mark and Canada, Hand Made.

In excellent vintage condition, with no chips, cracks or repairs.
