A very rare faceted gemstone of colourless Quartz with petroleum-filled cavities from Belouchistan, Pakistan.
The petroleum exhibits a vivid greenish-blue flourescence under UV light (Image 2).
Cut from a double-terminated Quartz crystal, this artfully faceted gem contains negative cavities filled with liquid petroleum, which appears a greenish-yellow in daylight, bubbles of Methane gas and small black blebs of Bitumen.
The last 4 images are magnified views of two of the petroleum-filled cavities within this gem, photographed in daylight and in UV light (blacklight).
The inclusions in these crystals make faceting perilous, the stones tending to shatter during the process, making this one of only very few available faceted gems of this fascinating Quartz variety.
The cut of this gem is not of the highest quality (in terms of symmetry and with small nicks on the girdle) and it is priced accordingly.
