Antique Milk Glass Round Box. buy Dithridge Ray End Dresser or Vanity Jar with Lid and Hand Painted Gold Enamel. Covered Pin or Puff Box. qLwa
At Memory Lane
Here, we have a rare piece of milk glass. This opal Victorian dresser box is decorated in the pattern sometimes referred to as “ray end” and sometimes simply referred to as “ray”. The gold enamel bronze was hand painted. The box could have been a covered pin or puff box. The lid has beautiful fiery edges.
It is apparent that both the base and the lid of this EAPG milk glass were painted at the same time, but I have never seen this lid on this base before and I have handled quite a number of Victorian milk glass boxes. I think (and this is merely my guess) that what may have happened did not take place at the factory, that is at Dithridge. I believe, it may have happened at the shop where it was sent to be enameled. Sometimes the enameling shop was right there at the glass factory, but sometimes they were not. I think the painter picked up the base and inadvertently picked up the wrong lid and simply painted them both as one combo. They were “married” at that little shop and have stayed together ever since. (Now, isn't that sweet?) There really is no other feasible explanation that I can think of where the enamel would appear to be of the same coloration, use, and patina. What do you think?
