St. Peter Graz in Austria is well-known for its midcentury manufacture of high-quality art pottery. Much of what was produced was in the "majolica" style, a raised-surface multi-color ceramic, often with floral (sometimes over-the-top) embellishments. What we have with this pair of candlesticks is an understated version of this flamboyant style.

It doesn't appear that these candlesticks were ever used! There isn't a chip, scratch, break, or sign of candle wax anywhere. Each one is stamped on the underside, so we can be sure of their manufacture and dating.

Standing 6" tall on 4"-round bases, the pillars twist upward into flat-topped receptacles for candles. The glaze is a mottled turquoise-green and ivory drip high-gloss glaze that gives these the appearance of being dipped in candy apple syrup.

Equally at home on a fancy dinner table or a picnic table, this collectible pair brings style wherever they buy may go.
