An antique Roberts & Belk silver plate Signed Large Ornate Decorative Fish Serving Knife and Fork with buy Beaded design handles signed in their original case.
The handmade silver plated Roberts & Belk Server and Fork has gorgeous decorative detail. The Server decoration is particularly beautiful with an Art Nouveau style pierced and engraved design. The beading which runs around the handle only runs around half of the serving area. The Large fork also has fabulous decoration. No one else will have a set like this. Likely to have been made in last half of 19th Century. Cutlery Craftsmanship at its finest. Made in Sheffield England.
The cased beaded design Server and Fork both feel solid and weighty, and are excellent quality. Both are engraved with “R&B” with Gothic “S, EP” initials.
The set is cased in a beautiful black faux leather (possibly leather) covered case with elegant black tooling on the lid and a gold rim The inside is lined with purple padded satin and blue velvet with depressions to keep the cutlery snug. Has a nice push button closure.
The large fish server is approx 31.5 cm (12 1/2 in) long. The large serving fork is is approx 24 cm (9 1/2 in) long. The case set is heavy and weighs 700 g (1 lb 8.6 oz).
The silver plate Serving cutlery set is in excellent antique condition with no tarnish marks, dents or rust. Both are solid, stable and perfectly usable. There is some wear to the silver plate on the underside where these servers would have rested when in use. Resilvering could be considered as this set would be worth it.
The box is in good condition with some marks of use. Please view photos for condition.

The first hallmark was entered in Sheffield Assay Office as "plate worker, Furnival Street, Sheffield" in 1810. From around 1822 to 1945 the firm traded as William Briggs. Later he entered into partnership with Samuel Roberts and Joseph Slater. In 1845 the firm, trading as Roberts & Slater, silver and electroplate manufacturers, entered its hallmark in Sheffield Assay Office in 1845. After the retirement of Joseph Slater, the firm continued until 1863 under the Roberts & Briggs. In 1863, after the retirement of William Briggs, the firm changed to Roberts & Belk - the new partner was Charles Belk. Its first hallmarks were entered in Sheffield Assay Office in 1864. After the retirement of Samuel Roberts in 1879, Charles Belk continued by himself, maintaining the Roberts & Belk name. Besides the Sheffield factory, the firms were active also in London, with showrooms in Holborn area. In 1901 the firm became Roberts & Belk Ltd. In 1961, the firm was bought by C.J. Vander Ltd.
