Robert the Bruce was one of the important figures in Scotland's long struggle for inderpendence from England. He was crowned in 1306, after murdering the nearest contender to the throne, as Robert Ist of Scotland. But it was not until 1327, and after many battles, that he was acknowledged as lawful king by the English. He died in 1329 and was buried in Dumfermline Abbey; but as the centuries passed the exact place became uncertain. In 1818, the tomb was rediscovered; the skeleton was wrapped in cloth of gold, it's ribs severed where the heart had been taken out (Bruce's wish had been that it should be buried in the Holy Land). He was reburied, and one of his descendents set up the memorial brass in 1889 to cover the tomb. This rubbing has been created from a smaller replica of the enormous original.

This facsimilie was one of the London Brass Rubbing Centre's fabulous collection of memorial plates that it exhibited at The Washington National Cathedral in Washington DC and then took on a memorable nationwide tour of the USA.

This lovely piece of artwork has been created by using metallic wax compounds in various colours and rubbing over a strong and stretched special rag paper. Because the waxes are stable they have been polished after application to make them shine.

This Brass Rubbing measures a large 42" X 20". It will look quite magnificent framed under glass but it can also be hung like a tapestry on either wooden dowels or a brass rod.

I will mailed it to you rolled in a strong mailing tube, duly insured for the full price during transit and will include a copy of The Historical Notes published by The London Brass Rubbing Centre. This booklet not only describes the historical details of this lovely rubbing but it also lists all the other memorial plates found in the Centre's wonderful and unique collection. buy
